Gordon Parks was an American photographer, musician, writer, and film director. In 1943, while working for the Office of War Information, Gordon Parks was given an assignment to travel to Daytona Beach, to photograph the renowned African American educator and activist Mary McLeod Bethune, and her surroundings. The pictures he took capture a time of imminent and momentous change.
